What is Spotify Technology?
Spotify Technology is the portfolio of products that Spotify built to run the world's most popular audio streaming subscription platform, now available to every engineering organization. It covers the full product development lifecycle through Portal by Spotify, Confidence by Spotify, Xirp by Spotify, and Spotify for Backstage.
How does Spotify Technology relate to Spotify?
The products are built by teams inside Spotify and proven on Spotify's own production workloads before they're offered to other organizations.
Is this a new direction for Spotify?
No. Spotify has shared its engineering tools with the world for years. We open sourced Backstage in 2020 and donated it to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, and it's now used by thousands of organizations. Spotify Technology brings all that work together under one name.
How is this different from Microsoft, GitHub, Atlassian, or other developer tool companies?
Most organizations today choose between a single vendor's all-in-one suite or a patchwork of tools they stitch together themselves. Spotify Technology is modular products designed as one system: adopt what you need now, and the pieces connect as you grow. And every product is proven at Spotify's scale first.
Is this the same as Backstage?
Backstage is the open-source framework Spotify created and donated to the CNCF. Spotify for Backstage adds premium plugins and enterprise support to it, and Portal by Spotify is the fully managed product built on top of it.
What's the difference between Portal by Spotify and Spotify for Backstage?
Spotify for Backstage adds premium plugins and enterprise support to a Backstage you run yourself. Portal by Spotify is fully managed, so there's no infrastructure to maintain.
Can I adopt one product without the others?
Yes. Each product works on its own, and the connections between them deepen as you adopt more.
